Ja book semi-final berth with 93-run win
REIGNING champions Jamaica are through to the semi-final of the 2013 West Indies Cricket Board four-day competition after recording their fourth straight victory this season.
Trinidad & Tobago all-rounder Rayad Emrit counter-attacked with a fearless half-century, but the persistent pressure applied by the varied Jamaica bowling attack and a pin-point long-range throw from Odean Brown gave the hosts a 93-run win at Sabina Park yesterday.
The result also gave Tamar Lambert’s team 13 consecutive wins, which is said to eclipse the 12-straight regional first-class record accomplished by Barbados.
After dismissing Jamaica for a second innings total of 259 in the opening session — and leaving themselves 286 runs for victory — the visitors were bowled out for 192, just moments before the scheduled close of the third day’s play.
Scores: Jamaica 147 (49.4 overs) & 259 (74.1 overs); Trinidad & Tobago 121 (48.2 overs) & 192 (77.2 overs)
Left-arm finger spinner Nikita Miller, who went wicketless in the first innings, was the pick of the Jamaican bowlers with 4-54 to bring his tally to an impressive 34 wickets in four matches.
Before Miller tied up the win, however, it was the pace bowling pair of Andrew Richardson and David Bernard that pushed T&T on the backfoot.
Richardson first dismissed sidelined West Indies opener Adrian Barath for only eight runs when the 22-year-old ambitiously and unwisely tried to pull a head-high bouncer, but only managed to sky a simple chance to Brown at mid-on.
Barath’s partner Lendl Simmons (10) followed shortly after when he drove a Bernard delivery into the lap of Danza Hyatt at cover to leave Trinidad stumbling on 21-2. It was Bernard’s second dismissal of the Trinidadian opener in the match.
Moments later it was 24-3 as Richardson trapped Jason Mohammed (3) leg before wicket to grab his second wicket of the innings and fourth of the match.
Miller then sent back T&T captain Denesh Ramdin (30) and left-hander Yannic Cariah (7) to sandwich leg-spinner Brown’s dismissal of the left-handed Kjorn Ottley (22) as the visitors slumped to 86-6.
Emrit and middle-order batsman Imran Khan then stalled the Jamaican juggernaut with an 83-run stand, which threatened to push the match into a fourth and final day.
He was particularly impressive in his knock of 52 runs, skilfully and cleanly striking the bowlers to various corners of the ground on a Sabina pitch was not easy to bat on due to some variable bounce.
The 32-year-old Emrit hammered five fours and two sixes off only 53 deliveries before he was run out brilliantly by Brown’s direct throw from 60 metres.
With the win Jamaica moved to 48 points, while T&T stayed on 36.
