European Football Round-Up – April 2
Dominant Devils
Manchester United became the first team in the era of the Premier League to win 25 after playing 30 games, this weekend.
The Red Devils showed their champion class, as despite failing to reach their best against relegation-threatened Sunderland, they claimed the three points with a rather fortuitous own-goal from a twice-deflected Robin van Persie shot.
Chelsea, meanwhile, will have to pull their socks up in order to ensure a top-four finish after the Blues crashed to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Southampton.
The Saints took the lead in the 23rd minute before John Terry equalised. However, the top-scoring Englishman in the league Rickie Lambert netted a free kick for the winner just two minutes later.
Manchester City 4 — Newcastle 0
Arsenal 4 — Reading 1
Swansea 1 — Tottenham 2
Aston Villa 1 — Liverpool 2
Real, Barca held to draws
Lionel Messi has now scored against all 19 other La Liga teams consecutively, however, Barcelona were denied three points against Celta on the weekend.
Messi assisted Tello for Barca’s first goal to level the match just before the break, and then scored to put them ahead. However in the dying embers of the match Celta snatched a point with a header past Victor Valdes.
Celta, however, are still third-bottom, three points and a game adrift of immediate safety.
Zaragoza 1 — Real Madrid 1
Atletico Madrid 1 — Valencia 1
Vallecano 1 — Malaga 3
Levante 1 — Sevilla 0
Juve take Derby D’Italia
Juventus, seeking vengeance against Inter for ending their 49-match unbeaten streak, overcame Inter 2-1 in one of Serie A’s biggest derbies.
Juve simply wanted the win too much, despite having a giant match-up against Bayern in the Champions League midweek. They took the lead early, and then quickly retook it even after Inter equalised in the second-half.
Blerim Dzemaili and Edinson Cavani meanwhile scored a hat-trick and a brace respectively, for Napoli in an 8-goal thriller against Torino. The match ended 5-3.
Lazio 2 — Catania 1
Cagliari 2 — Fiorentina 1
Palermo 2 — Roma 0
Chievo 0 — 1 AC Milan
Bayern rampant
Bayern Munich were in an absolutely ruthless mood as they trounced Hamburg, firing nine goals into the net of their unfortunate guests.
Claudio Pizarro had four and Arjen Robben had two, before Hamburg added the least bit of respectability to the scoreline late on for the 9-2 result. Meanwhile, Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski denied Munich the complete surety that no team can possibly catch them, with a late goal for the 2-1 win at Stuttgart.
Despite it still being technically possible that a team could catch Munich if they lose their remaining games, the title chase remains little more than a formality.
Dusseldorf 1 — Leverkusen 4
Schalke 3 — Hoffenheim 0
Wolfsburg 2 — Nuremburg 2
Mainz 1 — Bremen 1
