Relegation delayed
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Promoted Cavalier SC boosted their survival hopes in the Red Stripe Premier League with a crucial victory over fellow strugglers Humble Lion at Effortville yesterday.
Diminutive attacker Oshane Jenkins, left unmarked in the box, supplied the only goal of the game when he rose to direct a sweet header past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Damion Crooks in minute 25.
The KSAFA side dictated play from there on and should have doubled their advantage on numerous occasions had Chad Bennett and his teammates been in better form.
Despite a second-half rally from hosts, the visitors weren’t really in a mood to give anything away. They packed their defence with about 15 minutes to go, which proved successful in keeping Humble Lion at bay.
The victory was Cavalier’s first since the start of the third round, but it might just be the one to extend their stay in the country’s top football competition for at least another season.
They are now 10 points clear of the relegation places with six games to go.
The defeat, meanwhile, left Humble Lion still hovering just above the relegation zone — three points ahead of 11th place Highgate United who were beaten 3-1 by defending champions Portmore United at Drax Hall in St Ann.
Meanwhile, a late goal from central defender Linval Wilson, his first of the season, earned Savannah SC a 1-1 draw with Boys’ at the Frome Sports grounds.
The results delayed the inevitable as Savannah, promoted last season, would have been officially relegated back to the Western Confederation Super league with a loss.
The draw also prevented Boys’ Town passing Waterhouse FC for second place in the points tables as they inched to 52, one behind Waterhouse’s (53), while Savannah SC moved to 19 points, but still facing the reality of the drop.
Shane Edwards had given Boys’ Town the lead in the 28th minute with a header past goalkeeper Chad Blair, but Wilson replied with a header from a corner in the 84th minute.
