Mt Alvernia whip Holland despite Smith’s starring role
SPOT VALLEY, St James — Despite a courageous performance from Lanasha Smith, hitting a three-point basket as time ran out to force overtime, then scoring all her team’s points in the extra period, Holland High School went down to their sixth straight loss in the ISSA Western Conference, beaten 45-57 by Mt Alvernia High at Spot Valley High on Wednesday.
Smith scored a game-high 37 points, but had little support from her teammates, as the new comers who were winning their second game in three starts, recovered from a slow start, trailing 8-11 after the first quarter.
Mt Alvernia took over the lead in the second half to leave the score at 21-17 at half-time, and were up 31-23 going into the fourth quarter.
Smith rallied her troops and chipped away at Mt Alvernia’s lead before hitting the three-point basket as time ran out to force over time.
Smith scored all five points for her school in the fifth period, but could not stop Mt Alvernia scoring 10 points with Tara-Gay Heaven leading the way with 16 points, along with eight rebounds, five blocks and five steals. Shaneary Wilkins scored nine points and had six rebounds, while Shanice Hill scored eight points and had eight rebounds.
Sydoney James supported Smith with nine points.
