WIPA hails Windies for series wins over Zimbabwe
PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) —The West Indies Players Association (WIPA) has heaped praise on the regional side for accomplishing back-to back-home series victories over Zimbabwe in all three formats of international cricket.
The West Indies scored comprehensive victories over Zimbabwe in three ODI matches, a two-game T20 series, as well as two test series which ended in Dominica last week.
“We take great pleasure in congratulating our players and celebrating a comprehensive victory over Zimbabwe in each of the three series played,” declared WIPA President Wavell Hinds.
“We want to recognise the leadership of both Darren Sammy, who was in charge for the T20s and Tests, and Dwayne Bravo, who was skipper for the ODIs. They both exhibited excellent stewardship of their charges,” said Hinds in a press release.
Hinds also commended off-spinner Shane Shillingford on achieving Man of the Series and setting a new West Indian record of 19 wickets in a two-Test series, erasing Courtney Walsh’s record of 16 wickets set in New Zealand in 1995.
“Everyone knows that cricket is a team sport,” said Hinds.
“But teams are made up of individuals and there were some outstanding performances throughout the home series.”
The WIPA president praised the Shiv Chanderpaul for scoring his 28th Test century, Chris Gayle for notching his 15th and Johnson Charles, Darren Bravo and Ramnaresh Sarwan who all scored centuries as well as Lendl Simmons voted Man of the T20 Series.
Hinds also congratulated Sammy and his men for winning six straight Test matches, a feat which no West Indian team has accomplished since 1988 when they won seven straight against England and Australia.
“It is great to see what all West Indian cricket fans have been hoping for — a return to winning ways,” said Hinds.
“Cricket is a tough game — no matter the opposition — and to put a six-game winning streak together is definitely something that the guys can build on. We wish the team continued success”.
