William Knibb take aim at Spot Valley
SPOT VALLEY, St James — Defending champions William Knibb Memorial will seek to avenge a three-point first-round loss to Spot Valley High when they meet in a return-round ISSA/Western Confederation high school girls’ basketball game at Spot Valley High this afternoon.
In the first round, Loretta Gordon had scored 58 points to lead Spot Valley High to a 60-57 win on their way to a perfect first half, winning all five games.
Since that loss, William Knibb has reeled off three straight wins and will be hoping to avenge their lone loss today.
Spot Valley lead the points tables with 10, followed by Muschett High and Mt Alvernia on eight each; William Knibb and Montego bay high are on seven each while Holland losers of all five game splayed are on five points at the bottom.
In the first game of today’s double header, newcomers Mt Alvernia High will hope for a repeat win over Holland High who they had beaten 34-28 in the first round.
Mt Alvernia are coming off a 17-point loss to Muschett High on Monday after managing just 10 points between the second and third quarters.
The game was close for the first quarter with Muschett leading 14-10, but the Montego Bay school scored just eight points in the second quarter to trail, 28-18, at half-time and slipped further behind in the third quarter to trail 39-20.
Saldamieka Beeput was the top-scorer for Muschett with 18 points and six steals; Sashaniel Smalling scored 14 points, seven rebounds and seven steals, while Tasha Harris also scored 14 points along with five rebounds, five steals and five assists.
Shanearay Wilkins led Mt Alvernia with 11 points, while Martina Ferguson and Tara- Gay Heaven scored seven points each.
In another game, Montego Bay high edged Holland High by one point (33-32) after failing to score in the first quarter.
