Reno revive Super League hopes by blanking Wadaddah
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Former champions Reno FC revived their hopes of winning the Jamaica Football Federation Captain’s Bakery and Grill Western Confederation Super League after beating title favourites Wadadah FC 2-0 in a contentious third-round game at Jarrett Park on Monday evening.
Goals from Orane Warren in the first half and Denmark Gillings in the second period sent Wadadah FC to their second loss in the league and snaps a 10-game win streak dating back to mid-December last year.
Wadadah were also beaten in he mid-season final by Tomorrow’s People who will be in action this afternoon against Harmony at Jarrett Park and could take the lead with a win.
Reno’s win on Monday saw them join Wadadah on 27 points from 13 games, each with three games to go, which put them two more than Tomorrow’s People who have a game in hand with Granville FC in fourth place on 20 points to be followed by Holland United and Village United, both on 19 points.
On Monday, Warren gave Reno the lead with an audacious chip over goalkeeper Triston Bernard that just dipped under the crossbar.
Reno should have doubled the lead mid way the second half, but Gillings managed to scoop the ball over the unprotected goal from about three feet out.
Tempers, which were boiling from the first half, came to a head after assistant referee Ojay Dehaney disallowed what Wadadah thought was a goal.
A Wadadah player fired a loose ball towards the goal but a Reno defender who held on to the net for support booted away the ball.
The game was held up for about five minutes as the Wadadah players and coaches vented their anger at the decision.
Soon after the game resumed, Gillings made the points safe for the Westmoreland club when he got away from the Wadadah FC defence on the right flank and fired a low, hard shot past Bernard and into the far corner in the 87th minute.
Today, Tomorrow’s People could take over the lead in the points tables with a win over second to bottom Harmony SC when they meet at Jarrett Park, starting at 3:30 pm.
A win would take the mid-season champions to 28 points, one more than Wadadah and Reno.
Granville United could also create some space between themselves and fifth-placed Holland United and Village United if they can beat last-placed Logwood United at Watson Taylor Park.
Granville are riding a nine-game unbeaten run to drag themselves from the bottom of the tables and into semi-final contention.
In another game set for the UDC field, Catherine Hall and Bamboo FC — separated by a point — will meet in a relegation dog fight as both team seek to avoid the drop.
Two more games will be played tomorrow as Wadadah will seek to rebound from their loss when they take on Holland United at Jarrett Park, starting at 5:00 pm, while Village United host Norwood Strikers at the Trelawny stadium starting at 3:30 pm.
