Tuffy’ hits the mark to give W’House fighting chance
Waterhouse 1
Anderson (72nd)
Harbour View 0
JERMAINE ‘Tuffy’ Anderson logged his 18th goal of the season to give Waterhouse further hope of winning a third Red Stripe Premier League title after beating leaders Harbour View 1-0 at Drewsland in a late kick-off on Sunday.
The narrow win puts Waterhouse on 53 points, eight adrift of Harbour View’s 61, and raised the expectations with seven games remaining of the Junior Francis-coached outfit to repeat the Herculian feat of the 2005/2006 season, when they successfully chased down 13 points to rob Harbour View of the title.
Andre Clennon, who failed to land a contract with MLS outfit Portland Timbers, set Anderson free wide of the box before the league’s leading goalscorer worked his way forward then beat goalkeeper Michaud Barrett with a fierce shot from his right foot.
“If there is any hope of Waterhouse winning a third title this season we have to continue the process of scoring goals and winning matches,” said Francis.
“I was fairly confident coming into the match that we would have won this game, as our approach was a positive one with only victory on our minds,” he noted.
Harbour View had the better of the exchanges, especially in the first half, but failed to capitalise and missed a very good scoring chance in the first half. Continuing to play their high-press game, Harbour View should have again taken the lead in the second half but failed once more to capitalise, which could come back to haunt them later.
The goal that sunk Harbour View’s ship did not go down well with Harbour View coach Vin Blaine.
“I can’t say I’m not disappointed with the loss. We played very well, and a draw would have been a fair result. However, I was more disappointed in the way the goal was scored. The player was offside by at least a yard and the assistant referee was right beside the play, and am more disappointed losing in that manner.
