Massive win – Miller’s 11 wickets inspire JA to 170-run victory
CRAFTY spinner Nikita Miller continued his superlative form in the 2013 Regional four-day tournament, snaring 11 wickets in the match to lead Jamaica to a resounding 170-run victory over hapless Leeward Islands at Sabina Park in Kingston yesterday.
The third straight win of the tournament for captain Tamar Lambert and his team keeps them on target for early progression to the semi-final stage.
The result yesterday is also said to equal the regional first-class record of 12 consecutive wins held by Barbados. The Jamaicans resumed their second innings on 153-9 and saw lower order batsmen Odean Brown and Sheldon Cotterell extend their last wicket stand to 109 — a partnership that hauled the hosts to a total of 225.
Brown was out for 59 while racking up his second first-class half-century and Cotterell contributed 48 not out.
With Jamaica already having a dominant first-innings lead of 101, the 225 made in the second innings gave the Leewards a formidable target of 327 to pull off a virtually impossible win.
Leeward Islands skipper Sylvester Joseph and middle-order batsman Jamar Hamilton showed a stubborn willingness to fight in a solid 91-run stand, but Miller and company proved too good in dismissing the visitors
for 156.
Scores: Jamaica 209 (58.4 overs) & 225 (60.2 overs); Leeward Islands 108 (65.2 overs) & 156 (49.5 overs)
The 30-year-old Miller, who finished with 11-47 in the match, comfortably leads the tournament’s wicket-taking charts with an astounding 30 victims in three outings, including 10- and nine-wicket hauls against Barbados and the Windward Islands, respectively.
The out-of-favour West Indies left-arm finger spinner opted for modesty when asked about his bowling feats.
“I’m happy, yes… it is great to get the wickets because it is contributing to the success of the team,” Miller said.
Before the spinner mopped up the middle and lower order, it was quick bowlers Andrew Richardson and Cotterell who initially derailed the Leewards’ run-chase by restricting them to 20-4.
Opener Montcin Hodge (0) was sent packing by Andrew Richardson before Leeward Islands had a run on the board when he was bowled offering no shot.
Hodge’s opening partner Lendel Richardson also followed for nought when he edged a short of a length delivery from Andrew Richardson and was caught by Lambert at slip with the score on one.
The left-arm pacer Cotterell had Steve Liburd (5) caught by wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh and Andrew Richardson accounted for Devon Thomas (4) when the batsman carelessly hung his bat at a wide, lifting ball and was gobbled up by Danza Hyatt at slip.
Joseph and the fluent Hamilton then pulled the innings back on a track with a defiant partnership, during which the Sabina Park pitch seemed less difficult to bat on than it did over the previous two days.
The resistance was broken by leg break bowler Brown when Joseph (38) unexpectedly tried to loft the spinner moments before the tea break and was caught by David Bernard running around at extra cover.
Hamilton, who played crisp shots all around the park off both pace and spin bowling, made 52, but was eventually bowled by Miller, who many believe was belatedly brought into the attack after 23 overs.
Hamilton’s knock included seven fours and one six off 109 deliveries.
His demise signalled a swift end for the Leeward Islands in the third day’s post tea session as Miller snatched three of the last four wickets to end the innings with 4-34 off 13 overs and five balls.
Richardson claimed 3-30 off eight overs for a total of six wickets in
the match.
The Jamaicans now turn their attention to mighty rivals Trinidad & Tobago, whom they face in a four-day encounter at Sabina, starting Saturday.
The teams will them meet in the Super50 competition at the same venue on April 4.
