‘Valley’ hit the ‘Spot’ in first round of ISSA schoolgirl basketball
SPOT VALLEY, St James — Spot Valley High ended the first round of the ISSA Western Conference High school girls’ Open basketball competition on a perfect record, beating Holland High 55-46
for their fifth-straight win at Spot Valley High School on Friday.
With Loretta Gordon scoring 49 of her school’s 55 points, Spot Valley raced to 10 points, to lead defending champions William Knibb Memorial on seven after beating Muschett High
62-21 and newcomers
Mt Alvernia High, who
were 45-34 winners over Montego Bay High in a Montego Bay derby.
Muschett are on six points, followed by
Montego Bay High on five and Holland losers
of all four games played on four points.
Despite a second-half rally after trailing 32-15 at
half-time, Holland High failed to catch Spot Valley as Gordon also had
11 rebounds, while Lanasha Smith led Holland with
42 points and 11 rebounds with Natasha Bulgin scoring four points, but grabbed
19 rebounds.
Defending champions William Knibb won their third-straight game by blowing away the former champions, leading them
22-4, 38-6 and 51-16 at
the intervals.
Chanice Binns scored 21 points for William Knibb and had 15 rebounds and four blocked shots, Khadeen Thompson scored 12 points with 11 assists, Keila Henry also scored 12 points and had 22 rebounds, while Andrea Campbell scored 11 points and had 10 rebounds.
Sashamel Smallin scored eight points for Muschett, Tasha Harris had six points, seven steals and eight assists and Chen Lee Brown
scored six points and had seven rebounds and
five steals.
In the game played in Montego Bay, Mt Alvernia came back after a slow start, where they trailed by
10 points (6-16) at the end of the first. They led 22-18 at
half-time and were up by 10 points 36-26 at the end of the third-quarter.
Sheryl Lee Plummer top scored for the winners with 10 points and four rebounds, Tara Gay Heaven scored nine points and had nine rebounds and five blocked shots, while Leseasn Pommell scored eight points and had
seven rebounds.
Olivia Beckford had a game-high 17 points and four rebounds for MoBay High and Rushane Porter scored 13 points.
The return round starts this afternoon with a double-header at Muschett High, Holland High will take on Montego Bay High in the first game set to start at 2:30 pm followed
by Muschett taking on
Mt Alvernia High.
