Pascal leaves Barbados on the ropes
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — A devastating burst from discarded West Indies fast bowler Nelon Pascal left Barbados on the ropes on the opening day of their Regional Four-Day contest against leaders Windward Islands here yesterday.
Responding to a paltry 184 all out by the visitors in the fifth- round game, Barbados crashed to 33 for five as Pascal grabbed three for 15 in a quick spell at Kensington Oval.
Heading into today’s second day, Barbados are still 151 runs adrift of securing first-innings lead.
Opting to bat first, the Windwards were led by the tournament’s leading scorer Devon Smith who stroked 40, while Andre Fletcher chipped in with 38 and Kenroy Peters, an unbeaten 25, down the order.
Combative left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn picked up four for 50, while rookie off-spinner Ashley Nurse finished with four for 63.
In another match, Jason Mohammed’s second first-class century rescued Trinidad and Tobago on the opening day of their fifth-round clash in the Regional Four-Day Championship against Combined Campuses and Colleges.
The right-hander stroked an unbeaten 119 to steer the hosts to a strong position of 285 for five at the close at Queen’s Park Oval.
Sent in, T&T were reeling at 19 for three inside the first hour, but Mohammed anchored three big partnerships to haul his side away from danger.
He put on 117 for the fourth wicket with captain Dwayne Bravo who carved out an entertaining 60, before adding a further 80 with the big-hitting Kieron Pollard who got 45.
At the close, Mohammed was involved in an unbroken sixth wicket stand of 69 with Stephen Katwaroo, who was unbeaten on 28.
Mohammed has so far struck 19 fours and two sixes in an innings spanning five hours and 39 minutes, and 206 balls.
