Reggae dance championships now open
THE Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) is now accepting entries for the 2013 World Reggae Dance Championship. The competition is open to dance groups of three to six persons, 16 years of age and older, residing in and outside of Jamaica. Entries are welcomed in the categories of Roots Reggae, Dancehall, Reggae Contemporary/Classic, Reggae Dancehall and Dance Narrative.
The first World Reggae Dance Elimination Show will be held at the Grace Super Fun Day on Easter Monday, April 1, 2013 at Goodyear Sport Club, Morant Bay, St Thomas.
According to Juliet Cowan-Morgan, competition coordinator, “The aim of the competition is to reach young people who have unique dancing skills and talents that can provide entertainment value and also to develop the talent for economic self-reliance.”
The JCDC developed the World Reggae Dance Championship in 2006 to give professional and amateur “reggae dance lovers”, the opportunity to develop their creative talent in utilising local genres of dance.
