Eight western-based athletes named on CARIFTA Games team
Eight western — based athletes including five newcomers have been named in the Jamaican team that will participate in the 41st CARIFTA Games in the Bahamas from March 30- April 1.
The list which was released yesterday by the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) on their website, will also see St Elizabeth Technical’s assistant coach Reynaldo Walcott on the coaching staff.
Munro College’s Canigga Harriot, Orlando Smith and Jauavney James of St Elizabeth Technical, Warren Barrett of Cornwall College and Sanjay Lawrence of Petersfield High, have been named in the Boys Under 17 team, all making a national team for the first time.
STETHS’ former 300m hurdles gold medal Kimone Green along with Munro College’s Herbert Thomas and Green Island High Odail Todd were also named.
Todd who won a silver and a bronze at last weekend’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys Champs won a 4x100m relay silver medal last year but had to withdraw from the CARIFTA Championships with injuries he had picked up earlier.
Todd is expected to run both the 100m and 200m in the Bahamas.
Cornwall College’s Barrett, son of former Reggae Boyz goalkeeper and captain, Warren, and Petersfield’s Lawrence, are expected to do duties in the throwing events.
Barrett had won the shot put at CARIFTA Trials some three weeks ago, while Lawrence won the discus throw.
After winning the 800/1500m double at Champs, James of STETHS should be a medal favourite.
