Russell, Santokie in Super50 squad
WEST Indies all-rounder Andre Russell and left-arm swing bowler Krishmar Santokie have been called up in Jamaica’s 13-man squad to face the Leeward Islands in tomorrow’s Regional Super50 cricket clash at Sabina Park.
Russell is contracted to represent the Dehli Daredevils in next month’s start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and was originally scheduled to leave the island tomorrow. The powerful hitter, however, rearranged his travel plans to facilitate his availability for the Leewards’ visit.
The 24-year-old told the Jamaica Observer that his aim is to strengthen the title-holders as they seek their fourth 50-over win in as
many outings.
“I made the coach and selectors aware of my availability. I want to play the game against Leewards and then leave for India. My ticket was booked for the 21st, but I made changes to try to play for Jamaica and try to help them into a more comfortable position in the Super50 tournament,” Russell said.
The 28-year-old Santokie, who is available after a recent stint in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Twenty20 competition, is one of the top bowlers in regional limited–overs cricket and sheer quality aside, is sure to offer variety with his left-arm sling action.
The Leewards team, which arrived in the island on Monday, is at the foot of the table without a point
after losing all three Super50 matches so far.
The teams will also meet in the four-day tournament, starting on Saturday.
Jamaica, the five-time reigning champions, have won their opening two four-day matches, while the Leeward Islands have lost two and drawn one in three starts.
Meanwhile, Russell, who has been sub-par with his bowling of late, said he is hoping for a more fruitful IPL tournament than he had last season. He noted that some regular members of the Daredevils team are struggling with injuries and that may give him more playing time this season.
“There are some niggles and injuries to some of the guys and that’s a reason I have to get to India so early. I want to make most of the opportunity,” he said.
The IPL 2013 tournament opener — set for April 3 — will be between defending champions Knight Riders and the Daredevils at Eden Gardens.JA SQUAD — Tamar Lambert (capt), Nkrumah Bonner, Danza Hyatt, Andre McCarthy, Jermaine Blackwood, Andre Russell, David Bernard, Carlton Baugh, Nikita Miller, Odean Brown, Krishmar Santokie, Simon Jackson, Andrew Richardson
