Dacres to stay put
The irony of the IAAF World Youth and World Junior discus champion setting a record in the shot put after failing to break the record in the discus throw a few nights earlier was not lost on Calabar’s Fedrick Dacres after he repeated the Class One throws double on yesterday’s final day of the 103rd ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.
Dacres, who wrapped up his Champs career in a blaze of glory and then set out to cheer on his school to yet another Champs title, found a lesson in it, however.
“It tells me I am still improving in the shot put and I can’t stop…yet.”
Dacres threw 19.29m to break the record 18.98m held by another Calabar athlete Asinia Miller since 2011, and then told the Jamaica Observer he was planning to stay home rather than take one of the many offers to American colleges that were “piling up” since 2010.
“Why should I leave my coach and go elsewhere?” he responded with a question when asked why not take up a scholarship overseas.
Dacres earlier won the gold in the discus, throwing 62.80m which for him was “just OK, but it’s a gold and nine points for my school”.
