BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Following their crushing win in the opening Test this week, West Indies have kept faith with the same 13-man squad for the second and final Test against Zimbabwe starting Wednesday at Windsor Park in Dominica.

The hosts won the opening Test at Kensington Oval here by nine wickets inside three days on Thursday, after producing an incisive bowling display in the Zimbabwe second innings.

Head coach Ottis Gibson said the nature of the victory had given his side added confidence heading into the second Test.

“This win gives us a great deal of satisfaction. It was only three days, but it was three tough days of Test cricket. To come out on top is what we wanted. I don’t think everything went the way we wanted it to, but at the same time to win is a really good feeling,” Gibson said.

“A win in international cricket is always a very good thing for any team, no matter who you are playing against. We will take this win and move on full of confidence.”

Despite entering the Oval Test with three frontline fast bowlers and a medium pacer, spin turned the game for West Indies as offspinner Shane Shillingford finished with match figures of nine for 107.

In fact, it was his haul of six for 49 in Zimbabwe’s second innings that sent them reeling for 107 all out, on the third morning.

Gibson said the halfcenturies by captain Darren Sammy (73) and wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin (62) in a 106-run, seventh-wicket stand had also been crucial in swinging the momentum West Indies’ way, and he hoped to see more of the fighting spirit in the next Test.

“We lost a couple wickets early, but the all-rounder we selected, Sammy and Ramdin, did what they were supposed to do, which is stand up and get runs for us,” Gibson pointed out.

“We hope they will stand up and do it again in the second Test and more going forward. The bowlers were brilliant for us and we also expect them to do the same again in Dominica.

“It is all about people understanding their roles in the team and going out and feeling comfortable that they can do what is required in a situation.”

The win for West Indies was their fifth consecutive in Tests, the first time in 25 years they have strung together such a winning streak.
