J’can volleyballers shine on Miami Beach
THE little known Jamaican beach volleyball pair of Lecia Brown and Danielle Perry has started to make a name for themselves on the Pro Beach Volleyball circuit in the USA.
Brown and Perry competed in the beach volleyball section of an invitational Pro-Foot Volley Tour held on Hollywood Beach, Miami, Florida, recently and defied all odds to place fourth in the competition.
The Pro-Foot Volley Tour recently added beach volleyball to the attraction of the tour. Playing by special invitation only, the more accomplished beach volleyball player Perry teamed up with Brown, who is more accomplished at hard court volleyball than beach volleyball.
Amidst a field of the top-rated open volleyball beach players, Brown and Perry defeated some of their more recognised opponents to place fourth in their first outing together.
Interestingly, Brown had partnered with local-based Cherie Thompson to qualify for the inaugural Just Bet TVJ SN Beach Volleyball League in 2012. However, due to academic obligations overseas Brown was unable to participate in the league.
Perry, who was unable to participate in the qualifier to the league, was granted a bye and partnered with Thompson to place third overall in the female category.
The Jamaica Volleyball Association (JaVA) is looking to place increased emphasis on beach volleyball by staging and participating in more local and international competitions.
The medium-term goal is to qualify male and female teams to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
