Gordon’s record 58 too much for William Knibb
MARTHA BRAE, Trelawny — Loretta Gordon scored a record 58 points in one game as she led Spot Valley High to a close three-point (60-57) win over defending champions William Knibb Memorial in their ISSA/KFC Western Conference Girls Open basketball game at William Knibb Memorial in Martha Brae Wednesday.
The game was a repeat of last year’s final where William Knibb scored a close one-point (29-28) win over favourites Spot Valley at the Montego Bay Cricket Club for their first-ever title.
In another game played Wednesday, newcomers Mt Alvernia High came from behind to score their first win, beating Holland High 34-28 as the Trelawny school lost their second straight game.
Mt Alvernia lead the points tables with three from two games, while Montego Bay High, Muschett High, Spot Valley and Holland are all on two points each with William Knibb at the bottom on one point.
At William Knibb on Wednesday, Gordon, who is a member of the national senior women’s basketball team, scored the first four points for her team before Nashieka England scored two.
Spot Valley led by six points (19-13) after the first quarter, but William Knibb who were led by Andrea Campbell and Shanique Binns who both had double-doubles came back to cut the lead to just two points (29-27) at half-time then lead by five points (43-38) going into the fourth quarter.
Gordon, however, outscored the William Knibb team 22-14 over the final 10 minutes to give her team the win.
Campbell scored 22 points and had 12 rebounds for William Knibb, while Binns scored 16 points and had 20 rebounds as well as two steals.
At Holland High, the home team failed to make use of a game high 26 points from Lanacha Smith, who scored all but two points for her school.
Holland led 8-6 after the first quarter against the newcomers, but the Montego Bay school rallied in the second quarter to take the lead 12-11 at half-time and increased it to 22-12 after the third quarter.
Tara-Gaye Heaven, who had scored nine points in their loss to Muschett earlier in the week, scored 16 points and had six rebounds and two blocked shots while Lesean Pommiels scored 10 points and had three steals.
In addition to her 26 points, Smith also had two blocks and three steals.
