WATERHOUSE FC pushed struggling Savannah FC further into relegation mire after steamrolling the first season Red Stripe Premier League campaigners 4-0 in their RSPL third-round Monday night game at Drewsland.

Jermaine ‘Tuffy’ Anderson, the league’s leading goalscorer, netted all four goals, three coming in the second half after Waterhouse stepped up the pace.

Anderson opened the scoring in the first half with a powerfully headed goal in the 23rd minute after he rose majestically above the Savannah defence to meet a deft right side centre from schoolboy Owen Walters with aplomb.

The athletically built striker then went on to register his best scoring effort for Waterhouse in a 12-minute spree in which he notched his 14th, 15th and 16th goals of the season.

Anderson also had an opportunity to equal the club’s goalscoring record on the ground of five goals established by former standout Kevin Lamey. His left-footed effort, however, sailed inches over the crossbar from a shot taken from on top of the 18-yard box.

Savannah FC, rooted at the bottom of the RSPL, started their away game with much assurance and matched their hosts in purposeful play for most of the first half. However, good defensive play by Waterhouse to contain striker Dwayne Roseway prevented the Westmoreland-based team from reaping positive rewards from some well-planned forays into their host’s area that looked threatening until baulked.

It was a victory that head coach Junior Francis thoroughly welcomed and does not rule out getting back to the leaders for a shot at the title. “As it stands, we are some way behind the leaders on points, but as long as we continue on a path with encouraging performances like this and have a chance we will be going at the title. The four goals were encouraging going into the next game,” Francis added.

In a game where six cards were issued by Caymanian FIFA referee Christophel Stewart, including four against Savannah, one of which resulted in a penalty, Marvin Quarry, who deputised for head coach Everton Tomlinson, said despite the loss his team cannot give up. “We just have to keep on going. Our basic aim is to win our matches, but the manner in which we lost this game tonight (Monday night) it does not sit right with me. We started off well, but did not expect to come here to play against Waterhouse and the officials.”

Looking at the penalty which was awarded against his team to give Waterhouse their fourth goal of the match, Quarry argued: “It was our free-kick, how can a player have his hands like this behind him and the referee give a penalty (to the opposing side.) It does not help,” he murmured.
