Wolfe inspires Humble Lion to gutsy victory
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Wolry Wolfe put on a Man-of-the-Match display to help fire Humble Lion past Montego Bay United in third-round Red Stripe Premier League action at Effortville yesterday.
The visiting MoBay side actually dominated the early exchanges and, but for a few decent saves from home goalie Garth Herron, could have put the game to bed before half-time.
Despite being second best early on, Humble Lion were efficient and eventually nicked the opening goal with their first real attack of the game — Wolfe crossing beautifully for fellow midfielder Sean Coleman to hold off his marker and slot home.
Humble Lion maintained their grip on the game after the break and made the points safe in minute 62 when Wolfe drilled in a low shot after earlier issuing a warning with a few long-range efforts.
On those previous occasions, he was either indecisive or unlucky, but this time he stayed composed to get off a good shot from inside the 18-yard area, despite an unfavourable fumble.
A few wayward efforts from either side later in the contest failed to add to the score-sheet, as Humble Lion held on to stretch their unbeaten run to four game, including two wins.
This latest victory means Geoffrey Maxwell’s side moved seven points clear of the relegation zone on 31, and two ahead of fellow Clarendon team Sporting Central Academy who lost 4-2 at Boys’ Town.
While thankful for the three points, Maxwell was far from pleased with his team’s display.
“We won a game that we had to win; we worked hard for it, but overall I’m not satisfied with our performance,” he said.
The defeat, meanwhile, dented MoBay’s hopes of closing the gap on league leaders Harbour View. The St James side slipped two places down to fifth on 37 points.
“In games like these, especially when you are playing away from home, you have to put away your chances,” coach Dean Weatherly lamented.
