Alvas Powell wows French football agent
PUEBLA, Mexico — Jamaica’s Under-20 captain Alvas Powell has caught the eyes of French agent Joaquim Batica who was responsible for Arsenal signing Joel Campbell of Costa Rica last season.
Batica, of Paris-based BC Football Agency, mentioned a few players after watching Jamaica’s first match against Puerto Rico in which Jamaica won 4-1.
He mentioned numbers, “5, 11, 9 and 7”, those of Powell, Andre Lewis, Omar Holness, and Kendon Anderson. But after the second game in which Jamaica lost 0-4 to Panama, only Powell was on his lips immediately.
“The number five (Powell) is a very good player,” he told the Jamaica Observer at the Estadio Cuauthemoc on Saturday evening.
Batica, who discovered Costa Rican star player Joel Campbell when he was a 16-year-old prodigy, said he has been in the business for the last seven years and is a French Football Association licensed agent.
“I first started travelling out of Europe and have been working with Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama, and I think Jamaica will be interesting for us,” said Batica.
According to Batica, there is an agreement in France with some Caribbean countries that allow the players not to be deemed as foreigners and in the first division, the teams can only sign four foreigners.
But Batica wants to know more about the mentality of the Jamaican players and he is planning a trip to Jamaica in the near future to explore a number of possibilities.
“I saw the team play and I believe in the second half maybe mentally the team got a little bit down, but Jamaica is much stronger than that,” he noted.
“I want to see the team play more but I believe the number five (Powell) is a very good player. There are lot of other interesting players, but admit I need to see them more,” he added.
