Newspaper to sponsor St James D-1
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Western Publishers Limited, publishers of the regional tri-weekly tabloid Western Mirror will sponsor the St James Football Association’s Division One league for the next three seasons, it was announced yesterday.
A press conference was called for the offices of the sponsor yesterday, but was called off an hour after the scheduled 11:00 am start after the non arrival of publisher Lloyd B Smith, who it was later heard had a medical emergency.
The competition along with the Senior League was played without a sponsor last year.
St James FA general secretary Bruce Gaynor, who was at the launch, apologised on behalf of the FA and explained that they had received commitment for sponsorship of $1 million for the first season.
The league that will be named in honour of the late Seba United coach Weston King and former Seba United and Western Mirror executive Dennis Barton, is set to get underway on Monday with three games.
Salt Spring Roses and Seaview will meet at the UDC field, Abes and Mountain Villa will face off at Wespow Park, while Barrett Town and Juniors FC will start their campaign at Wyndham.
All games will start at 3:00 pm.
Twelve teams will take part in the league and will play in two groups for the first two rounds.
Mountain Villa, Abes Academy, Mar Road, Paradise FC, Irwin, and Westgreen FC will play in Zone A while Salt Spring Roses, Seaview FC, Lilliput Rovers, Copperwood FC, Barrett Town, and Juniors will play in Zone B.
