U-20 Boyz plot defeat of Panama with strategy sessions
PUEBLA, Mexico — As Jamaica’s Under-20s continue to prepare for their crucial CONCACAF Group C encounter against Panama tomorrow, the coaching staff had light training recovery sessions which included a video review of their 4-1 win over Puerto Rico.
The young Boyz had a 20-minute drive to Noria FC on Wednesday evening for a training session for approximately one hour and were taken through their drills.
The players that started in the Puerto Rico game had it a little bit light in an effort for them to recover from the hectic match on Tuesday.
So the focus was on the ‘benchers’ and they were taken through more rigorous drills to bring them up to higher levels of fitness.
Then yesterday morning, they watched the video of the game in an analytical manner with the coaches taking every minute to point out errors or what could have been done differently.
“This is normal in the life of professional players. We sit and analyse the game, and of the opponent also, and it is always a learning process for them,” said head coach, Brazilian Luciano Gama.
“They are young and they need that kind of activity where we show the game in what they did good and try and correct everything for the next game” he pointed out.
He added: “We can’t count mistakes, we just have to improve on somethings, like move the ball a little bit faster or flanks or have more patient. Because we made the game easy, we relaxed and I hope that doesn’t happen against Panama,” he said.
The players were receptive and in professional spirit as they discussed and pointed out certain errors and complement each other during the session.
With Panama expected to play Puerto Rico last evening, Jamaica could be an early qualifier to the quarter-finals if Puerto Rico fail to win.
Jamaica lead the three-team Group C with three points, while both Puerto Rico and Panama are pointless up to yesterday. With two teams set to advance, Jamaica look a safe bet to do so.
