Night football fires up St Thomas football fans
A massive crowd turned out on Wednesday night to experience a first in their community. While York Oval near Seaforth in St Thomas has been the scene of many intense football battles between teams of fledgling and old rivalries, it has never been done in such style than it was on Wednesday night.
The St Thomas FA, led by Wayne Thompson, has inaugurated Wednesday Night Football in the Captain’s Bakery and Grill Major League, fashioning that if Monday Night Football of the Red Stripe Premier League.
In the feature encounter under improved lighting, Port Morant United defeated Bath United 1-0, courtesy of a 23rd-minute beauty from Odain McPherson (Paraquat). The curtain-raiser between Prospect and Yallahs was not played due to “logistical issues”.
While it was difficult to estimate the turnout at the game, it will go down as one of the largest crowds to have turned out for a football game in the parish “for a long time”.
While fans savoured the sweet delights of title sponsors, the Captain’s Bakery and Grill, spectators were left thirsty for an accompanying beverage sponsor.
Nonetheless, the action on the pitch atoned as spectators begged for more after 90-plus minutes of entertaining football.
Thompson promised that a full implementation of the Wednesday Night Football games will commence next Wednesday with a double-header, those fixtures still to be determined.
“The objective of this initiative is to take advantage of lessons learnt from Monday Night Football in the Premier League, St Catherine and KSAFA. It is evident that the time the games are being played must be in line with the availability of the spectators who are always willing to support,” Thompson said.
