H’View are Bell KO champs
HARBOUR View FC joined Arnett Gardens FC as the most successful clubs of the top Corporate Area knockout tournament when they toiled to a 5-3 penalty win over bitter rivals Boys’ Town at the Stadium East field on Wednesday night.
After locked at 2-2 at the end of regulation and extra time, Harbour View were perfect from the 12-yard mark with five strikes to give them their sixth title — same as Arnett — of the KSAFA/Yellow Pages Jackie Bell KO.
Christopher Harvey, Nicholas Beckett, Jaron Richards, Kemeel Wolfe and Richard Edwards were on target for the ‘Stars of the East’, while Asrick Samuels, Renae Lloyd and Marvin Morgan Jnr beat opposing goalkeeper Michaud Barrett.
Boys’ Town goalkeeper Kirk Porter agonisingly skied his effort.
Scoring during freeflow, were John Ross-Edwards who opened for Harbour View in the 14th minute, but Boys’ Town rallied in the 45th through Shane Edwards to set an otherwise dull game alight.
At the end of regulation play, both teams were locked at one goal apiece forcing the game into extra time, but Harbour View substitute Kemeel Wolfe sparked a revival for his team with a well-taken goal in the 97th minute.
With Harbour View gaining a slight ascendancy, Marvin Morgan changed the script with an excllent right-footed low drive from 20 yards in the 109th minute that gave the sprawled-out Barrett no chance.
Harvour View coach Vin Blaine said the victory “was a sweet one” and will give his side momentum going into their Red Stripe Premier League game against Tivoli Gardens on Sunday.
He paid tribute to Boys’ Town for a well-fought match.
“Credit must go to Boys’ Town as they gave us a good fight… we scored early and then relaxed and they built up momentum and we couldn’t get them off their game,” said Blaine, who is also co-ordinator of the national women’s programme.
Boys’ Town’s Andrew Price rued losing his inspirational captain Michael Campbell early in the contest with a suspected fractured shoulder.
“It’s a major loss as he had to leave with a suspected shoulder fracture, but we have not heard anything from the hospital yet… also in warm-up one of our main players, Marvin Stewart, said he would not be able to play, so we did lose some major players,” said the former Boys’ Town star turned coach.
But Price was full of praise for the team that adapted well to the game despite losing key figures. “It showed me that our team has depth and character as the lads stood out there and fought very hard as we went behind twice and fought back… I must give them credit as they gave a good effort,” he said in a post-match interview.
With the score at 1-1, Boys’ Town had a glorious opportunity to snatch the victory late in the regulation spell when Lloyd got himself in a fantastic position after being fed a cross from the right side, but his tame reply was a letdown for fans.
