Sir Patrick’s Day – Waterhouse gift new coach with win over BT
WATERHOUSE defeated Boys’ Town 3-1 in their Red Stripe Premier League third-round game at Drewsland on Sunday to present new coach Anthony Patrick with his first since taking charge at Drewsland two weeks ago.
Patrick, who is no stranger to the Waterhouse coaching set-up after many years serving as the club’s junior coach and acted in the capacity as senior coach on numerous occasions, was happy for the victory.
“I felt good with the victory as it was a more gutsy performance by the team than in the resent past although we did not make a lot of passes. The important thing though is that we got three points. Another thing is we did not score many goals in the last couple of games and we got three on this occasion which should act as a morale booster,” he said.
After a blip in the sixth minute by strike Gary McIntosh who failed to put Waterhouse ahead with only Boys’ Town goalkeeper Kirk Porter to beat from close up, Jason Watson two minutes later put Waterhouse in front.
The hard-working midfielder unleashed a speculative but unstoppable left-footed shot from just under 40 yards that Porter failed to get his body behind.
Waterhouse continued to press for more success that came 12 minutes later from the boot of Weston Forrest. This woke up the Collie Smith Drive-based Red Brigades and they continued to take charge thereafter, but with not much reward to show for their efforts.
During this period, Boys’ Town gave their hosts many anxious moments by striking the crossbar on two occasions, but none more heart-rending than in minute 40 when Marvin Morgan failed to bring the teams level.
The out-of-sorts midfielder was presented with a glorious opportunity to redeem himself, but with Waterhouse goalkeeper Richard McCallum at his mercy Morgan succeeded only in thumping the ball against the cross bar to spurn his team’s best hope to reduce the deficit before the half ended.
This seemed to spur Boys’ Town on and they continued their crusade for parity in the second half with the same gusto. Waterhouse, though playing without their earlier fire, did enough to hold off the charging ‘Brigades’ until the inevitable happened in minute 59 when Carlos Wright netted.
The mobile midfielder profited from an errant ball that fell at his feet from a goal-mouth melee. This was occasioned from a corner kick from which Wright successfully scrambled the ball across the line from close up to reduce the deficit and immediately enhanced speculation for further success.
As it turned out, this was wishful thinking by Boys’ Town as the goal seemingly sparked Waterhouse into overdrive. And with 17 minutes of play remaining, Jermaine ‘Tuffy’ Anderson struck from the spot to regain a firm hold on the game.
The goal opportunity was as a result of a rash tackle from Asrick Samuels on Forrest in the area that gave referee Cardella Samuels no choice but to point to the spot.
