Windwards crush T&T to post second win
KINGSTOWN, St Vincent (CMC) — Windward Islands crushed hapless Trinidad and Tobago by 10 wickets with more than a day-and-a-half to spare yesterday, to reel off their second straight win in the Regional Four-Day Championship.
Set only six runs for victory after bundling out the Trinidadians for a hugely disappointing 86 in their second innings, the Windwards needed just two overs to complete the victory before lunch at Arnos Vale Stadium.
They were carried by off-spinner Dalton Polius, who picked up three for 10 and left-arm seamers Delorn Johnson (3-21) Kenroy Peters (2-22), who provided strong support.
The win was their second after they pummelled Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) by seven wickets in their opening round contest at Beausejour Cricket Ground last Tuesday.
Starting the day on 52 for three still requiring a further 29 runs to make the Windwards bat again, T&T lost their captain Denesh Ramdin in the day’s opening over without any addition to the score when he edged a cut behind off Johnson.
Amit Jaggernauth, starting the day on four, battled hard for his 11 as he added 21 for the seventh wicket with Yannic Cariah, who got 15 off 46 balls in nearly an hour at the crease.
The stand was ended when Polius snatched the first of his three wickets with Jaggernauth well taken at slip by Devon Smith.
Cariah followed soon afterward with just two runs added at 75 for eight when he was smartly stumped by Lyndon James, pushing forward at Polius, and Rayad Emrit (2), lasted six balls before he was lbw on the back foot to off-spinner Liam Sebastien.
The end came swiftly as Polius sent back Shannon Gabriel, leg before wicket without scoring.
The two teams renew their rivalry in the Super50 one-day tournament here next Thursday before the Windwards hosts Guyana in the four-day competition starting next Sunday.
T&T travel to St Kitts for their clash with Leeward Islands at Warner Park.
