Title-holders Portmore United remain 10 points behind leaders Harbour View despite blanking Cavalier 2-0 in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) match at the Stadium East playing field yesterday.

Jamar Jackson opened the scoring for the visitors six minutes shy of the half-time interval with a sensational 30-yard strike before Sueala McCalla wrapped up proceedings with another sublime effort in the 82nd.

Second-placed Portmore now have 41 points from 24 matches, while Cavalier remain mid-table with 34 from 24 outings.

After previously losing twice to Cavalier this season, Portmore’s coach Andre Waugh was encouraged by his team’s efficient display and expressed satisfaction at not falling further behind Harbour View.

“It was important for us to get the three points and not fall further behind. I think we performed well today (yesterday) and as always I’m pleased with the win. We have all of 10 points to make up, but we don’t want to give up. We will continue to go out and maintain that professional approach,” Waugh said.

Left frustrated by his side’s lack of precision in front of goal, Cavalier coach David Lalor opted to credit Portmore for the win.

“Games are won and lost by mistakes and they (Portmore) capitalised on ours, while we didn’t do the same. I think it was a good win for Portmore… we missed our chances and we have to work on that aspect. We failed to get it right in attack,” Lalor said.

A largely dull first half sprung to life in the 39th minute when Jackson fired a right-footed half-volley spectacularly beyond former Portmore goalkeeper Gariece McPherson, and into the net.

Only 15 minutes into a bruising and busy second half, Kirk Fletcher got a great opportunity to level proceedings when he broke around the back of the Portmore defence, but lashed his close-range effort wide.

In the 75th minute Cavalier’s Deno Schaffe rose well to meet a corner, but his header was comfortably saved by Portmore’s custodian Kemar Foster.

McCalla made the points safe eight minutes before the end, however, when his sweetly struck left-footer from just outside the penalty box was judged to have crossed the goal line after ricocheting off the crossbar.
