Munro, STETHS capture Western Champs

CATHERINE HALL, St James — Munro College regained their place at the top of the table in western high school boys’ track and field, while St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) girls romped to their 12th straight title, as the Hanover Co-operative/County of Cornwall Athletics Association (COCAA) Western Championships ended at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Saturday.

Despite a hold-up on Saturday due to heavy afternoon showers, the three-day event that started on Tuesday with the boys’ elimination at St Elizabeth Technical and continued on Thursday at Irwin High, produced yet another outstanding show, as 13 records were broken on Saturday and two established.

After being beaten by six-and-a-half points by STETHS last year, Munro roared back with a big effort, tallying 461.5 points to beat defending champions STETHS by 133 points (328).

Cornwall College had their best placing in over five years, moving from fourth after the elimination, to third place on 209 points, edging Herbert Morrison Technical (194) by 15 points, Petersfield High were fifth with 177.5, with Green Island High in sixth on 138.5.

STETHS completely dominated the girls’ section from the first day to end on 414.5 points, more than double the 201 scored by Manning’s School, with Herbert Morrison Technical third on 170, Petersfield on 122.5, and Rusea’s High on 114.5 points, a massive improvement of 101.5 points from last year when they tallied just 13.

After being beaten for the second straight year in both the Class One 100m and 200m finals by Munro College’s Delano Williams, Odail Todd led two Green Island High relay teams to gold medals, smashing the Class One 4x100m record, lowering it to 40.68 seconds, bettering the 41.45 set by Herbert Morrison Technical in 2007.

The expected third clash with Williams did not materialise, as Todd got the baton well ahead of the Munro College anchor leg runner, who pipped Herbert Morrison’s Gawain Williams for second place.

Todd also anchored the 4x400m team, splitting 49.10 seconds, as they won in a smart 3 minutes, 18.14 seconds, beating Petersfield High and William Knibb Memorial.

Petersfield’s Asain Hall is the new Class One girls’ 400m record holder after clocking 55.22 seconds, erasing the 55.30 held by Herbert Morrison’s Nickesha Anderson from 2004, and St Elizabeth Technical’s Davita Prendergast a year earlier.

All three girls’ 800m records were broken — Rusea’s High’s impressive Stephanie Barrett lowered the Class One mark of 2 minutes, 19.97 seconds set last year by Herbert Morrison’s Renae Ambursley to 2 minutes, 17.49 seconds.

STETHS’ Chantai Smith was more impressive in Class Two, running 2 minutes, 16.23 seconds to beat the 2 minutes, 17.8 seconds set in 2003 by Kaliese Spencer of Manning’s School, while Junell Bromfield set a new Class Three record of 2 minutes, 18.95 seconds, beating her own one-year-old mark of 2 minutes, 21.79 seconds.

All three boys’ 800m record also went — Munro’s Herbert Thomas, who also won the 1,500m and 3,000m, ran 1 minute, 54.06 seconds to beat Petersfield’s Oshane Turner (1 minute, 54.71 seconds) as both dipped under Desrick Brooks’ 1 minute, 55.04 second set in 2007.

Lacovia High’s Paul Tate clocked 1 minute, 58.13 seconds to win the Class Two race, erasing Manning’s Kenroy Williams’ 2 minutes, 00.6 seconds mark set in 2003 from the books, while STETHS’ Jevaughny James ran 2 minutes, 04.59 seconds, bettering the 2 minutes, 05.37 seconds set in 2005 by former Manning’s School runner Darrion Bent.

Final points standings Boys: Munro College 461.5, STETHS 328.5, Cornwall College 209, Herbert Morrison 194, Petersfield 177.5, Green Island 138.5, William Knibb 74, Manning’s 36, Lacovia 35, Godfrey Stewart 28.5, Maud Mcleod 23, BB Coke 15, Cambridge and Muschett 14, Frome 13, Holland 12.5, Irwin and Spot Valley 12, Lewisville 10, Newell 9, Hopewell 6, Rusea’s 5, Balaclava 3, Grange Hill 2.
