Golf Flights Classic set for Caymanas next Sunday
The first Jamaica Golf Association (JGA) event for this year will tee off at the Caymanas Golf & Country Club next Sunday.
The JGA Flights Classic is a stroke play event, competed in flights. The format gives golfers of all skill levels the opportunity to compete with their peers for honours in their respective handicap categories, which are 0-6, 7-11, 12- 17, and 18+. Ladies 0-8, 9-16 and 17+. Juniors will compete in their own segment.
Golfers scheduled to compete include Wayne Chai Chong, Sean Morris, Kieth Stein, and Richard White. Tiana Cruz, Kei Harris and Jack Stein are some of the juniors who will be in contention for prizes.
The Flights Classic will close the 2011-2012 tournament year and those who qualify for invitations to the National Trials will be selected at the end of the current season.
The JGA is in the process of revising the current selection policy for National teams, which has been in place for some time. Based on the performance of the teams over the years, the association feels that an overhaul of the current policy is now urgent.
Brian Roper of the Sandals Group has been appointed to head a committee to review the policy and make recommendations geared towards improving the way national teams are selected and prepared for national duty, with a view to improving the standard of golf and performance in regional events.
A meeting will be held at Caymanas on the weekend of the Flights Classic to unveil the proposed changes to the selection policy.
