Burton sends Gillingham clear with 11th goal of season
GILLINGHAM, Kent (CMC) — Former Reggae Boyz star Deon Burton notched his 10th league goal and 11th of the season, as Gillingham beat Dagenham and Redbridge 2-1 to go two points clear at the top of the League Two standings on Saturday.
His second-half penalty off the bench proved the winner after Gillingham had led on 29 minutes through Leon Legge, but found themselves up against it after Femi Ilesanmi levelled early in the second half for the Londoners.
The victory carried the hosts to 62 points and strengthened their thrust for automatic promotion to League One, with 14 games left in the season.
Playing at the Priestfield Stadium, Gillingham were ahead on the brink of the half-hour mark in controversial circumstances when Legge’s goal was allowed to stand despite an offside flag.
Up 1-0 at half-time, Gillingham were pegged back just seven minutes into the second half when Ilesanmi pounced on a failed clearance to equalise for the visitors.
Entering the game as a 65th-minute substitute for Andy Frampton, Burton needed just three minutes to get on the scoresheet when goalkeeper Chris Lewington fouled Anton Robinson and he converted the resulting penalty.
The 36-year-old has made 27 appearances for Gillingham since joining on a free transfer last August.
