$16.026m raised as Pitter, Mondon triumph in Sagicor Sigma Run
SHAWN Pitter and Elizabeth Mondon emerged winners of the male and female sections of the 2013 Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run 5.5K in New Kingston yesterday.
Sixteen minutes and 59 seconds was the new record set by national cross country representative Pitter in the male run category.
Another long distance national representative, Rupert Green, crossed the line in a time of 17.29 minutes for second place, while Kemar Leslie came in third in a time of 17.51 minutes.
Female winner Mondon crossed the mat first in a time of 20 minutes and nine seconds. She was closely followed by Danielle James, who placed second in 20:21 minutes, while third place went to Arieta Martin in 21:19 minutes.
For the male champion Pitter, it was his first time running in the Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run.
“I came out here to have fun today. I have been out of action
for two months now and I just decided to come out this morning and run a decent race… if you can see I didn’t even bother to wear my watch, it wasn’t about time, but I am glad I ran a decent time and won the race,” said Pitter.
For Mondon, it was third time lucky, adding the 2013 title to the ones she won in 2008 and 2010.
“I had a bit of difficulty at the start of the race with the crowd, but as soon as I got through that, the race was quite easy for me. I was challenged by James at some point, but my experience paid off and I came through in the end.”
In the other categories, Rohan Gordon took top honors in the open walk category, while Nyasha Heaven secured the female walk crown.
Sheldon Cox secured the male wheelchair title, while the female wheelchair race was won by Sylvia Grant, who beat Colleen Morrison.
The Under-16 male and female titles went to Garfield Gordon and Cheser Adams, respectively. The Corporate Run in the male category, went to Wilfred Wilson of the Urban Development Corporation, while the female equivalent was won by Carey-Ann Williams of the Bank of Jamaica.
The largest corporate team was the Jamaica Biscuit Company.
Wilfred Morrison of Companies Office of Jamaica took the executive run award, while the corporate run male team was J Wray & Nephew, with the female corporate run team title going to the Bank of Jamaica.
A record 20,534 runners, walkers and wheelchair registrants participated in the 15th staging of the Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run, the largest 5K road race per capita in the world.
