Lil Joe remembered
IT was a gathering of family and friends at JAH Ova Evil — a celebration of the life of conscious artiste Lil Joe — held at 10 1/2 First Avenue in Vineyard Town, St Andrew, last Wednesday.
Lil Joe, whose real name is Alty Nunes and son of former National Dance Theatre Company tutor Patsy Ricketts, died from a ruptured blood vessel in the University Hospital of the West Indies on February 7, 2011. He was 25.
The celebration was headlined by fast-rising conscious artiste Chronixx, who reminded the gathering ‘this is not a Chronixx show’.
The performance area was set up just outside the popular home-studio where Chronixx had recorded tracks. During his impressive set, he lauded the impact Ricketts had on the lives of many. He said they were a family and that ’10-and-a-half’ was not just a place, it was a lifestyle.
Other notable performances came from Kelissa McDonald, Kabaka Pyramid, Lil Joe’s brothers Aijah and Jahnoi Nunes. There were also appearances by Donisha Prendergast, Tarrus Riley, Empress Sativa, Miss Jamaica UK Gemma Feare, and veteran deejay Major Mackerel.
