Harlem shaking Jamaica
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Out with the old and in with the new. It’s not the Harlem Shake that we know from the 80s and 90s; in fact it has taken a life of its own captivating everyone as it spreads. Step aside Gangnam Style.
The Baauer-written song with its electro-pop beat came out two years ago but the videos only recently started going viral.
Unsurprisingly, the song and home-made video craze has caught on in Jamaica where several feature students at prominent high schools and universities.
The videos, hundreds of which can be found on YouTube, usually begin with a masked person dancing to the song’s beat. Inclusive of pelvic thrusts and spastic arm movements, the routine can best be described as ‘interesting’.
When the lyrics start, everyone present lets loose and it becomes a party on whatever street side or office they’re in.
It’s often said, seeing is believing, so here’s an example of the new Harlem Shake.
