Girlz awareness kicks off in Florida tomorrow
THE Reggae Girlz Awareness Conference will be staged at the Sheraton Suites Hotel in Plantation Fort Lauderdale tomorrow night with Jamaica’s minister with responsibility for sports Natalie Neita-Headley among the chief speakers.
Also scheduled to address the first of such a confab for the women’s game in Jamaica is president of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Captain Horace Burrell.
Other key presentersmake will be national women’s football programme co-ordinator Vinemore Blaine, Jamaican sportscaster Ed Barnes and IRIE FM’s sports reporter/producer Nicholas Evans, who in his spare time champions the cause of women’s football.
Also expected to attend is former Jamaica senior national coach, Winston Chung-Fah, who was recently honoured by the game’s governinng body, FIFA.
Neita-Headley is also expected to share with South Floridians Jamaica’s new sports policy, and specifically the role football will play in its execution.
The conference is being organised and sponsored by the newly formed Jamaica High School Alumni Sporting Network (JHSASN) and its affiliates.
Also expecting to attend are parents of Jamaica’s overseas-based female players and other well-wishers.
With the international sporting spotlight still on Jamaica as a result of the country’s impressive performance at the 2012 London Olympics, the conference “is a prime opportunity to raise awareness and garner support for Jamaica’s women’s football programme”.
The conference aims to highlight and showcase the issues and struggles of the Girlz since their inception in 1990. Also, their successes will be examined, which include being the only Caribbean country to have teams qualify for the CONCACAF Finals in both the Under-17 and Under-20 World Cup qualifying tournaments in 2012.
