SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Munro College’s Delano Williams and Odail Todd of Green Island look set to battle for the gold medals in both sprint events at Saturday’s finals of the COCAA/Hanover Co-operative Credit Union Western High School Track and Field Championships. The event is set for Catherine Hall, after yesterday’s eliminations at the St Elizabeth Technical High Sports Complex in Santa Cruz.

After 18 finals yesterday, Munro College, who were dethroned last year, lead the championships with 165 points, ahead of Petersfield High (117.5) with defending champions STETHS in third place on 111.5 points, followed by Cornwall College in fourth on 92 and Herbert Morrison in fifth on 62 points.

Green Island High were in sixth place on 25, followed by Sav-la-Mar neighbours Mannings School on 17, and Godfrey Stewart on 13, William Knibb on 12, Lacovia, Frome and Maud McLeod are on seven points each, followed by Hopewell on six, BB Coke on five, Lewisville on four, Balaclava and Muschett on three, and Holland High and Rusea’s High on one point each.

Meanwhile, both Williams and Todd easily qualified for both finals with Williams holding the edge on times, as well as winning the 100m semi-finals where both clashed.

Williams, the ISSA Boys’ Championships Class One sprint double champion as well, got out of the blocks late but caught Todd at about 70m and both eased across the line with the Munro athlete winning in 10.55 seconds, and Todd next in 10.85 seconds.

Earlier in the semi-finals of the 200m, Williams, the IAAF World Junior Championships gold medallist, ran all by himself over the final 60m to win in 21.66 seconds, while Todd, the IAAF World Youth Championships 100m champion, won his heat in 21.80 seconds, just ahead of Herbert Morrison’s Gawain Williams.

One record was verified yesterday, in the Class Two shot put where Cornwall College’s Warren Barrett, last year’s Class Three bronze medallist, set a meet record 15.44m.

Barrett, who began competing in the event last year, beat the 15.07m set last year by Munro College’s Kino Dunkley, who was expected to retain his title this year, but failed to make a legal mark, with three fouls in the preliminaries.

Dunkley recovered to win the discus, beating Barrett with 47.17m to Barrett’s 42.56m.

Petersfield’s Stevon Crooks took the Class One shot put with 15.32m ahead of two Munro College athletes, Drexel Maycok (14.99m) and Jevaughn Shaw (14.08m).

Shaw, who competed with a suspected fractured toe on his right foot after a shot put fell on it, won the discus Class One with 49.05m on his final throw to beat Petersfield’s Glenord Watson, who led from the first round with 48.05m, with Maycok third with 45.29m..

STETHS’ Davian Powell won the Class Three event with 10.97m, beating Cornwall College’s Orlando Crawford (10.10m) and Petersfield’s Devar Clayton (10.01m).

Munro’s Herbert Thomas retained the Class One 1,500m with a run of 4 minutes, 11.22 seconds ahead of STETHS’ Romario Guthrie (4 minutes, 13.22 seconds) and Kenne Clarke of Petersfield (4:13.60 minutes).

It was first and second for Petersfield in the Class Two race with Tion Grey winning in 4:19.22 minutes ahead of Javanni Campbell (4:23.90 minutes) and Cornwall College’s Andre Bennett (4:24.32 minutes).

STETHS also took both places in the Class Three race with Jevaughny James winning in 4:44.34 minutes ahead of Shemar Samon (4:45.04 minutes) and Green Island’s Divonio Thompson (4:48.80 minutes).

Herbert Morrison’s Basil Thompson won the Class One high jump with a clearance of 1.85m, winning on the count back from Munro College’s Kemar Mowatt and another Herbert Morrison athlete, Triwayne Blake.

Cornwall’s Odaine Lewis won the Class Two event with 1.80m, beating Godfrey Stewart’s Asani Hylton in a jump off, with Roderick Boulin of Munro third, also with 1.80m.
