Mister C sinks Rowe’s Strikers to lift Ja Skittles competition
A clinical display by Mister C ‘A’ highlighted their victory over Wray & Nephew Premier League winners Rowe’s Strikers
in a nail-biting final of this year’s Jamaica Skittles Federation/ Pattex competition at the
Mystix Sports Bar on Molynes Road on Sunday.
The Spanish Town-based team outscored their more-fancied rivals 5-4. Mister C started out on the right
note when the ‘lefty’ Basil Kelly
rallied to beat veteran campaigner Errol Wright 620-490.
Rowe’s Strikers were not rolling over and playing dead and quickly erased the deficit and went ahead 2-1 after Ruthlyn Bailey out-cued Monica Lewis in the ladies singles, and Karyl ‘Chassy’ Walker teamed up with teenager Kamani Pennant to defeat Emmanuel Munda and Anthony Channer in the first men’s doubles game 660-420.
But Mister C had other ideas and their middle order won three straight games to eke out to a 4-2 lead.
Lewis and her son Herman Thorpe won the mixed doubles over Jacynth ‘Gigi’ Kellier and Durrant ‘Busha’ Davis 860-450, before Kieto ‘Bibi’ Stephens outplayed Rowe’s Strikers captain Raval Montague 1130- 870.
Stephens then teamed up with Kelly to beat Garfield ‘Milligram’ Samuels and Montague 1310-660.
Mister C were smelling blood and moved in for the kill, but their celebrations were delayed after the experienced Samuels dug into his bag of tricks and got by Yannick Senior 1520-1150 to hand his team a lifeline.
Former federation president Lenville Pottinger then put in a masterful display to defeat opposing skipper Aubyn Flynn 1260-1070 to force the match into a deciding ninth game.
Rowe’s Strikers selected the usually calm Clifford ‘Shakes’ Campbell, who had been producing wins at the death for his team all season, but on Sunday his winning streak was snapped by Neville ‘Doggy’ Elleston, who sank off six balls after the gate lock, sunk
the last ball sinkers with aplomb to
send the Mister C supporters into
wild celebration.
The champions collected $75,000 and the winner’s trophy, while the runners-up collected $35,000.
In the curtain-raiser Eastern All Stars drubbed Eagles Strikers 5-2 to take third place.
Dane Jones of Eagles Strikers, who won all his nine individual zone games, won the most valuable player award, while Ruthlyn Bailey, of Rowe’s Strikers, who won seven out of nine zone games, was voted the most valuable female player.
David ‘Shabba’ Adams and Stacy Miller, of Starliners, won the mixed doubles award for winning seven out of nine games, while the men’s doubles award was shared between Winston Jordan and Lloyd ‘Tiger’ Smith of Eastern All Stars, and Clive Woolery and Seymour Bennett of Eagles.
With the team competition now out of the way, the players will now cue up for the Sista National Open Singles Championships, which begins on Sunday at the Bourbon House at Windward Road.
