Blast Them Away for Ash Wednesday Trophy
Blast Them Away, whose mercurial run of seven consecutive wins was halted only by the repeat Horse-Of-The-Year Saint Cecelia in May and June of last year, returns for his four-year-old season in the Overnight Allowance highlighter at Caymanas Park today.
Conditioned by the champion trainer Wayne DaCosta for Robert K Thomas, the bay colt by Proud Accolade out of Evita Villa (Forrest Wild Cat) bred by Woodsfield Farm in the USA, has been moving at exercise as well-oiled machines do and looks all primed to resume his winning ways with nothing in the line-up that’s as closely fierce as Saint Cecelia.
Champion jockey Dane Nelson, who went winless last Saturday, has the call and an early chance to get back into the winner’s row.
The Ash Wednesday Trophy is a 1,300 metres scamper for three-year-olds and upward that has attracted a decent field of seven, and is scheduled for an approximate 4:30 pm post with first post at 12:30 pm.
At a glance, this seems to be a three-horse race with stablemates, the imported Sir Von, to be ridden by out-going champion jockey Dick Cardenas, and claiming apprentice Holando Butler piloting the consistent Jet Setter, who has failed to visit the winner’s enclosure in his last 10 races, handing Blow Them Away his most serious challenge.
The five-year-old dark bay mare Saint Theresa, ridden by the champion and leading apprentice Shameree Muir, and Classic Princes, with Paul Francis astride, are no slouches at this level and are expected to be handily placed for a look in. However, the far-striding American colt may just live up to his name and just blow them all away as he goes hunting for his first win as a four-year-old and resume the conquest after running into a tartar in May and June of last year.
