Wadadah move closer to mid-season final
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Wadadah FC moved within a point of qualifying for the mid-season final of the Jamaica Football Federation Captain’s Bakery and Grill Western Confederation Super League after stretching their unbeaten run to seven games with a 1-0 win over Catherine Hall at Jarrett Park on Sunday.
The win improved Wadadah’s points tally to 20, three more than second-placed Village United, who were held 0-0 by Logwood United in Zone One. And with one game to go next week Tuesday, the Montego Bay team will need only a point to advance to the final set for February 24th.
In Zone Two, Tomorrow’s People SC and Reno FC, who are separated by a point after both drew their games 1-1on Sunday, are still in a close battle for the other spot.
Loxley Thomas, a January signing by Wadadah, scored his first goal for the team, netting in the 56th minute as Wadadah won their sixth game and fifth in a row.
Catherine Hall were the last team to prevent Wadadah from winning a game as they also extended the time since conceding a goal to 385 minutes.
Village United, who were a point behind Wadadah going into the round of games, slipped further back after they were held 0-0 by Logwood United who they had beaten 2-1 in the first round.
The Zone Two spot is still up for grabs and both Tomorrow’s People and Reno failed to capitalise and were held by lower-ranked teams.
After playing to a 0-0 draw in the first round, Tomorrow’s People needed an extra-time goal to draw 1-1 away to Holland United at Elliston Wakeland Centre and inched to 18 points.
Both goals came late in the game as Ronique Haynes scored in the 82nd minute for Village United and Christopher Dyer replied in time added on.
Reno failed to avenge their first-round shock loss to promoted Norwood Strikers as Denmark Gillings’ 50th-minute goal was cancelled by Dane Gillett’s 63rd-minute equaliser.
There were, however, wins for struggling Granville United and Harmony with Okeefe Brown in the 10th minute and Tennison Jarrett in the 82nd minute gave Granville their second win of the campaign and avenged a 2-0 first-round loss to Bamboo FC at Sam Sharpe Teachers College.
Harmony FC, who conceded 12 goals in their previous two games, also got revenge for a first-round loss after edging Petersfield FC 1-0 at Bunkers Hill with a Carlington Johnson 49th-minute goal.
