St George’s rule schoolboy football awards
NOEL Johnson of Glenmuir High and Amal Knight of Wolmer’s Boys were the Most Valuable Players (MVP) of the schoolboy season, but it was St George’s College (STGC) that were the toast at the ISSA Gatorade/Digicel schoolboy football awards on Wednesday.
The ceremony, held at the Terra Nova Hotel All-Suite saw the ‘Georgians’ proudly lifting the prestigious Olivier Shield — the symbol of local schoolboy football supremacy. Also they bagged the Corporate Area Manning Cup trophy and $350,000 in cash prizes and a computer.
STGC, missing several players who are in Mexico with the National Under-20 team and one with the senior team, were neatly decked in their light blue and white T-shirts and khaki pants as they gathered around, burst into cheers and lifted their trophies.
STGC were winning their fourth title in five years, officially ending the schoolboy season in style as Jerondu Henry delivered a wonderful vote of thanks for the schools that participated.
Meanwhile, daCosta Cup champion Glenmuir High, despite falling short in the Olivier Shield to STGC, got some respite as their talented striker Noel Johnson was voted MVP for the rural daCosta Cup competition.
However, Johnson, who was a part of the 2011 National Under-17 squad that qualified for the FIFA World Cup, is currently in Japan trying out for Shimizu S-Pulse team with the hope of signing a contract after his stint. Wolmer’s Jorghino James is also there on trials.
Goalkeeper Amal Knight of Wolmer’s Boys was voted the Manning Cup MVP after leading his team to the Walker Cup title with some sterling performances.
Brian Richards of Excelsior won the Golden Boot Award with his seven goals in the second round that propelled his team to the semi-final and he also won the Most Goals Scored in the first round with 21 goals.
Cleon Pryce of Dinthill High was the Golden Boot Award winner for the daCosta Cup with seven second-round goals, while Alvas Powell of Paul Bogle High won for Most Goals scored in the first round with 22 strikes.
St George’s College was the Most Attacking Team with 59 goals in the Manning Cup, while St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) with 53 goals was the daCosta most prolific team.
The Best Defensive Team Award was won by Wolmer’s Boys after conceding a miserly six goals all season in the Manning Cup. STETHS, who conceded just eight goals, were the Best Defensive Team in the daCosta Cup.
STETHS also collected $175,000 and their Ben Francis trophy, while Glenmuir High collected $175,000 for their triumph in the daCosta Cup.
Excelsior High won the Most Disciplined Team award after amassing 160 of the 200 points available. STGC were second with 142 points ahead of Mannings High with 135 points.
This award is determined by a number of factors including points gained for clean and on time team sheets. Nine points are deducted for red cards and three points for yellow cards.
