MONTEGO BAY, St James — Premier League team Montego Bay United easily beat St James Football Association’s Senior League team Reggae Youths 3-0 at Jarrett Park on Sunday to lift the Captain’s Bakery and Grill Knock-out title.

Reggae Youths who were promoted from the Division One last season and eliminated two Western Confederation Super League teams in the previous rounds, put up a good fight for the first 30 minutes but eventually wilted under the sustained waves of attacks from the more composed Leon Irwin gave MBU the lead at half time before two quick goals early in the second half from Omar Gordon and Jermaine Woozencroft knocked the fight out of Reggae Youths who have qualified for the Jamaica Football Federation’s Flow Champions Cup Knock-out that will get underway later this year.

Reggae Youths coach Oscar Irving, while expressing his disappointment with the loss, said his young team gained “valuable experience for the Flow Champions Cup”.

He said that “we got the chance to test ourselves and now we can make the adjustments”.

Irving added that his team had played to instructions for the first 30 minutes, by playing the pasing game “before they gave that up”.

Dr Dean Weatherly, the MBU coach, said the game was a good practice for the restart of the third round of the Premier League, which begins on Sunday with an away game to leaders Harbour View.

“We are still a work in progress and we tried a few things today and some different looks under game conditions and we will accept some of the things and reject the others,” he said.

Reggae Youths put up a good early showing, and backed by some quality goalkeeping from Raion Bernard, kept MBU at bay while creating a few chances of their own.

MBU were, however, patient and eventually broke though the Reggae Youths resistance when Irving latched onto a rebound before blasting a low shot from the right side past Bernard in the 39th minute.

MBU went 2-0 up two minutes into the restart when Gordon produced a brilliant solo effort to beat two defenders at close quarters to score into an unguarded goal.

Another lightning strike two minutes later saw a three-man combination rip open the Reggae Youths defence and gave Woozencroft the chance to fire into the goal from close range.

Late in the game MBU made three offensive changes bringing on Ramone Brown for Woozencroft, Aldaine Grant for Kemiro James and England based Tashan Branshaw-Brown for Gordon against a tiring Reggae Youths defence.

An injury to goalkeeper Jacomeno Barrett after the three changes forced MBU to complete the game with striker Allan Ottey in goal.
