PYEONGCHANG, Republic of Korea — Jamaica’s head of delegation Glendon West said the heroics of the ice figure-skaters at the Pyeongchang 2013 Special Olympic Games will boost the floor hockey team ahead of their gold medal match today.

Nigel Davis won the silver medal in yesterday’s Singles Male Level One ice dancing event before combining with Tamra Mitchell in the Team Level One category to cop another second place finish in the country’s inaugural entry in Olympic figure-skating.

West lauded the achievement and told the Jamaica Observer that the floor hockey players will have added inspiration to fight for gold when they meet either Trinidad & Tobago or Hungary in the final.

“This is a big achievement for us and extra special because it’s the first we are competing in ice figure-skating. Perhaps at the IOC Winter Games in (Pyeongchang) 2018 we will see Jamaicans compete there as well.

“This kind of thing should push the hockey players to win gold. I think that any motivation they can get, seeing that their two skaters received silver medals, will make them push even harder. I’m sure they would want to do one better than the figure skaters,” West said.

Meanwhile, the head of delegation attributed the silver medal success to the work of Special Olympics Jamaica (SOJ), as well as the people of Jamaica and the body’s many sponsors.

“It’s good for us to accomplish this and we are dedicating it (the success) to the SOJ and the people of Jamaica and also to our sponsors,” he said.

The Games, which started on January 29, will end with a closing ceremony at the Yongpyong Dome in Pyeongchang today.

The 24-member delegation will depart Korea tomorrow.
