Will Bolt, Beast join Weir at C’Down Classic?
Olympic 200m bronze medallist Warren Weir of the Racers Track Club has confirmed that he will be making his seasonal debut over 400m at the Camperdown Classic set for Saturday, February 9 at the National Stadium.
Weir, who was at the launch of the event at the Spanish Court Hotel yesterday, made official his participation but organisers could not confirm his clubmates, the world’s fastest men Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake.
“Yes, Racers Track Club will be in full strength this year. As warren would say ‘the whole scheme’,” said chair person of the meet, Cynthia Cooke, though not saying if the Racers contingent would include the iconic duo.
Other Racers athletes who attended yesterday’s function were Rosemarie White and Bobby Gaye Wilkins.
The Camperdown Classic, in its ninth year, has so far indicated that over 100 schools and clubs will participate.
The event, which will have a team from the Cayman Islands, will be streamed live.
Again, the top three teams in the boys and girls Class One 4x100m relays will receive monetary prizes of $60,000, $25,000 and $15,000 for first, second and third, respectively.
The meet, scheduled to start at 8:15 am with the running of the 400m Hurdles Open for male and female, will see two past students in Sharon Mowfatt and Audrey Llewellyn-Hunter being the 2013 honorees.
Meanwhile, guest speaker at the launch, Dave Myrie, the first vice-president of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) and principal of Kingston College, commended the founders Glen Mills and Cynthia Cooke for their vision for conceptualising the event.
“As I use this opportunity on behalf of the JAAA to fully endorse development meets such as Camperdown Classic, let me also use this privileged position to laud and thank the officials who are the unsung heroes at these sporting events,” said Myrie.
With a slew of sponsors on board, Delia Burke of VMBS and David Crawford of Fidelity Motors, gave greetings.
