Jamaica battle for figure-skating gold today
GANGNEUNG, Republic of Korea — The Jamaican team of Tamra Mitchell and Nigel Davis will today square off against Hong Kong for the gold medal in the Special Olympic Winter Games ice figure-skating event at the Gangneung Ice Rink.
Jamaica and Hong Kong were left to battle for the top prize after they were the only entrants in the event’s team category.
Jamaica’s head of delegation Glendon West said the two are positive going into the competition and are anxious to do well.
“They are upbeat they can win the gold and we would all love that gold medal for us and for the people back home,” he said.
The pair spent a week preparing in Florida, United States, ahead of the Pyeongchang 2013 Games.
Mitchell and Davis, both more accustomed to the highly strength-oriented speed skating, are the island’s first competitors in the artistic world of ice dancing.
Jamaica, who are also competing in floor hockey, won gold medal in the event in 2009.
