Muschett High on the hunt for basketball double
MONTEGO BAY, St James — The ISSA/KFC Western Conference boys’ basketball titles will be decided today, when Muschett High face defending champions Herbert Morrison High and Holland High, respectively, at the Montego Bay Cricket Club in games three of the Under-16 and Under-19 sections set to start at 4:00 pm.
Muschett High had completed the regular season unbeaten and were tipped to take the double, but lost the first game in the Under-16 section to Herbert Morrison, then were upset by Holland High in the second game of the Under-19 section to force today’s deciding games.
After losing to Herbert Morrison by a point in Game One of the Under-16 best-of-three series, Muschett bounced back with a comfortable 72-55 win last week.
In the Under-19 finals, Muschett had won the first game 64-47, but were ambushed 78-62 by Holland High in the second game.
Despite losing one game in either section, Muschett will still start favourites to win both titles, but will know they can’t afford any mistakes.
Karlington Barrett, who is playing his way back into match fitness after missing nearly two months with a broken arm, will lead the Under-16 team against a Herbert Morrison team that looked flat in Game Two after their game one heroics.
Barrett looked unstoppable at times during Game Two, but Herbert Morrison must hope that Ralique Grant, who scored 33 points in the Game One win, including seven three-pointers, will repeat that performance if they are to have any chance of retaining their title.
Holland High’s Kenrick Lindo had a week to rehab a badly sprained ankle in Game Two of the Under-19 series and will need to be at his best along with Clifton Shettleworth if they are to repel Muschett, and Michael Schloss, who set the tone by scoring the first basket in all four quarters last week.
Hugh Smith, one of the smallest players on either team, came up big in Game Two with a gallant 21 points, most of which came at crucial junctures for Holland.
