Knights chop down Warriors in basketball final
MONTEGO BAY, St James — High-flying Montego Bay Boys Club Warriors were brought back to earth in the Hi-Lyte/Insports Western Basketball Association’s Men’s Championships, beaten 60-55 by top-ranked Montego Bay Cricket Club Knights in game one of their best-of-three finals at the Montego Bay Cricket Club on Saturday.
Warriors had beaten higher-ranked teams in two previous rounds — the quarter-finals and semi-finals — to qualify for the finals and a shot at the National Basketball League-West but came up short after a blazing start.
The game ended badly for Warriors when Sheldon Lyle who had led them to the finals with a series of outstanding performances was ejected with eight seconds to go after he kicked the ball out of the court. He will miss Saturday’s game two as a result.
Warriors led by nine points (21-12) after the first quarter but sputtered in the second as Knights came back to tie up the scores at 30-30 at half-time.
Knights then edged ahead by a point (47-46) going into the fourth quarter before going on to win by five points.
Daniel Malcolm was the top-scorer for Knights with 13 points, Jamoi Richards scored 11 point and had six rebounds and five assists, while Omroy Kerr scored 10 points.
Andrew Parkinson was the high scorer for Warriors with 15 points and nine rebounds, Lyle scored 14 points before he was ejected, while Fabian Gifford scored nine points.
