WILLIAMSFIELD, Manchester — Debutant Andrew Brodeur reigned supreme in the marquee High Mountain Coffee 10K Road Race after turning back a decent field in Williamsfield, Manchester, yesterday.

The 22-year-old American, running out of the Shore Athletic Club, won in 31:38, well ahead of his local competitors.

Brodeur, a Duke University student, virtually had no equal in the race, taking command from the 3K mark, before running away with the title by the time he reached four kilometres.

His closest rivals were Kirk Beckford and Damion Bent, who both seemed to have used up most of their energy the previous day representing Jamaica in the NACAC Cross Country 8K and just could not keep pace.

“I really had no idea what to expect because this is my first time in Jamaica,” Brodeur told the local media in his post-race interview.

“It was really hot and hilly, but if they ask me to come again I will definitely be back because this is really special for me.”

Beckford and Bent thought they would have had a better chance to best Brodeur had they not competed less than 24 hours earlier.

Jennifer Nelson, meanwhile, completed a sweep for the overseas athletes after taking the female category in 41:02. Arita Martin and Moesha Meade were second and third, respectively.

Earlier in the day, Ainsworth Daley, who also represented Jamaica in the NACAC Cross Country 8K on Saturday, won the 5K.

The south Manchester native, who represents the Discover Youth Track Club out of Clarendon, turned back the likes of Wayne Martin and Ramone Mundle.

“I was feeling very tired; my thighs are a bit sore but I came second last year and really wanted to take the title this year. Right now I’m very happy,” said Daley.

Alethia McLaughlin of St Elizabeth Technical High School was the female winner. The class two athlete was delighted to have bettered last year second-place finish.

“A part of the race was very hard but I went out there to do my best and I’m really happy that I was able to win this year,” she said.
