Asafa Powell, Frater join SportsMax for Sigma Run
THEY may no longer be teammates at MVP Track Club, but with preparations fully underway for the 15th staging of the Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run, Sports Cable giants SportsMax, Jamaica’s beloved sub-10 king Asafa Powell, and JAAA vice- president and Racers sprinter Michael Frater have teamed up for the annual corporate run slated for February 17.
Powell and Frater will participate as part of the SportsMax team, which will all be dressed in Powell’s “I am King” slogan from his T-shirt line, with the aim of helping Sagicor and all other participating teams to raise funds for the Bustamante Hospital for Children, the Jamaica National Children’s Home and the Best Care Lodge.
Powell will also act in an official capacity as the starter for the Sigma Run.
Powell shared his reason for participating in his first Sigma Run. “I believe in giving back, and this year the run is geared towards children, and I see this as my way of contributing in giving them the care and attention that they need from any of the three institutions that will benefit from the run. SportsMax has been involved with track and field for as long as I have, as well, so it’s a natural association.”
SportsMax Regional Marketing Manager Tanya Lee is ecstatic that both Powell and Frater have decided to participate with the SportsMax corporate team.
“SportsMax has been airing Asafa’s and Frater’s races for most of their professional careers, and we actually aired live and exclusively to a Caribbean audience, Powell’s world record breaking run in Rieti, Italy, in September of 2007, so their successes have helped us to build our regional brand!”
Sigma started in 1999 and has raised over $100 million for charity while promoting sports participation and healthy lifestyles among Jamaicans. SportsMax’s team will include Powell, Frater, Wavell Hinds, Simon Crosskill, Lance Whittaker, and 40 other members of the SportsMax and CEEN teams.
