Warriors fight on in Hi-Lyte basketball league
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Montego Bay Boys Club Warriors will hope their giant-killing act will continue this evening when they take on top-ranked Montego Bay Cricket Club Knights in Game One of the Insport/Hi-Lyte Western Basketball Association’s Men’s Championships at the Cricket Club courts set to start at 7:00 pm.
Warriors, who were the seventh seed after the regular season, created upsets in both the quarter-finals and semi-finals to qualify for their first Men’s Championships finals and with a berth in the National Basketball League-West on the line to the winners, the stakes will be high.
Warriors beat second-ranked William Knibb Thunder in the quarter-finals, then proved their win was no fluke by beating Trelawny Tornadoes, the third seed in the semi-finals.
Knights, last season’s losing finalists, cruised in the play-offs after topping the regular season with just one loss and will start favourites to beat the plucky Warriors over three games.
Knights will, however, need to pay attention to Warriors’ Sheldon Lyle who has been lighting up the scoreboards with a series of high scores, including 39 in their semi-final win over Tornadoes.
Andrew Parkinson and Fabian Gifford have also been making serious contributions to the Warriors’ efforts, but they will face the best defence so far when they come face-to-face with Knights today.
Knights scored 85 points in their last outing, their semi-final win over Sav J-Hawks last weekend and Jamoi Richards, Omroy Kerr and Lamar Richards are expected to lead the Knights’ scoring.
Games Two will be played next weekend.
