St James, Cornwall score consolation conference wins
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Outgoing Under-19 champions Cornwall College and St James High took third places in the consolation play-offs of the ISSA/KFC Western Conference basketball competition at Montego Bay Cricket Club on Tuesday.
Despite a game-high 37 points from Shavaughn Reid, Cornwall beat William Knibb, 90-58, in the Under-19 affair to avenge an earlier one-point loss, while St James beat Spot Valley, 53-44.
William Knibb led Cornwall, 12-8, after the first quarter, but the latter stormed back to open a big half-time 35-25 lead. Cornwall maintained the 10-point buffer going into the fourth quarter where they blew out the Trelawny boys, 37-15.
Tevin Brown led Cornwall with 30 points, seven rebounds, eight steals and five assists. Darren Sterling scored 15 points, while Alex McFarlane notched 10 points and had 17 steals.
William Knibb’s Romario Anderson scored 12 points to support Reid’s 37.
In the Under-16 game, St James — who had a walk-over win over Spot Valley in the regular season, came from behind to earn a nine-point win, thanks to Tyrell Foster’s 20 points, 16 from Aaron Allen and 14 points and 12 rebounds from Tafari Vassell.
Jhamanique Brown led Spot Valley with 14 points, while Teavardo Daley scored 11.
